For me, this was the movie that I most identified myself with while growing up. My parents were just like Muriel's, I often closed myself in my room, listening to music and living in my own fantasy just like her. It was so similar to my own experience that it was scary but what I loved the most was that Muriel had someone to save her. She had Rhonda, I didn't have that support back then, so I usually wish I had a friend like that (and Rachel Griffiths was fantastic). It's so hard to make a comedy that is funny but also depressing but this movie is that but it also offers the happiest ending, especially since it's earned. I also feel the need to highlight Jeanie Drynan's performance as the mother, she made me cry the most, and my mom is just like her.It brings me so much joy to know that this movie is still talked about but it's a credit to the story. Everyone has a Muriel in themselves, the loneliness and desire to be someone else, to be better. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/Wi9lAMg

"Muriel's Wedding" (1994) is the saddest comedy you'll ever find. It's such a heartbreaking story about self-loathing but it also offers a lot of hope. Toni Collette is so relatable as Muriel and absolutely devastating.
