Hugh Jackman's acting alone (aside from all the film geek symbology, cinematography, score, esoteric meaning etc) is phenomenal! The torture scene with hammer in hand is some of the best acting I've ever seen, and encapsulates a desperate Father willing to go to the extremes so well He should have got an Oscar for that role.
